The walnuts of Sorrento: versatile ingredients between sweet and savory
Walnuts are a typical product of the Sorrentine peninsula, let’s discover together the characteristics of this dried fruit.
Origins
The walnuts have ancient origins, were present in Campania since the I century A.D. They were appreciated by the Romans, as evidenced by the remains of fossil nuts and charred trees found at Ercolano and paintings that reproduce the nuts found in Pompeii.
In addition, this fruit was attributed divine properties:
- were thrown to newlyweds as a sign of good wishes and symbol of fertility;
- In the Roman era this fruit was considered as a symbol of the underworld.
Walnuts are a product of Campania and are grown mainly in the Sorrento peninsula, thanks to the environmental characteristics of this area that allows the growth of strong and robust trees.

Features of the walnuts of Sorrento
The shell of these nuts is light, thin and not very wrinkled, they have a crisp, aromatic kernel and cream-white color, with a pleasant taste. In addition, there are two most common ecotypes that fall under the name of Sorrento walnut:
- one of regular shape and slightly pointed at the apex;
- one smaller and rounder.
The harvest of Sorrento walnuts takes place between September and October, depending on the area. The nuts are sold fresh or dried on racks outdoors. They are often eaten during Christmas lunches.
Special features
The kernel of the walnuts of Sorrento is very easy to extract and is very popular in the confectionery industry.
In addition, the famous Nocino or Nocillo, dark-coloured and aromatic liqueur, is made with Sorrento nuts. The latter is served after meals as a digestive or can be accompanied by some sweets.
This dried fruit is ideal as a snack but it is also an excellent ingredient of sweet and savory recipes, such as: sauces, spaghetti with nuts, biscuits, nougat and semifreddi.
