Marina del Cantone
Marina del Cantone, an open and peaceful bay, idyllic heaven for those who love the wild sea and prefer to stay out of the most known destinations.
Marina del Cantone, overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, is situated between the bay of Ieranto and Recommone. It is famous for its pebble beaches and clear waters. Marina del Cantone is the ideal place for those who want to enjoy a quiet day at the beach, without having to face long walks; it is one of the longest beaches of the peninsula, with free areas and beach resorts.
In Marina del Cantone there are numerous hotels and restaurants with terraces overlooking the sea, from which you can enjoy an amazing view on the Gulf of Salerno. The local specialty is “spaghetti alla Nerano”, served with zucchini, whose recipe has been handed down for generations.
From the beach of Marina del Cantone, through a scenic trail, you can reach the characteristic beach Recommone, a small piece of paradise.
Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua
The Chapel is located on the eastern end of the beach of Marina del Cantone and was built in 1646. In 1800 Don Luca Maggio made the floor with his blazon in the center and with reliefs and marine designs. At the foot of the baroque altar, in polychrome marble, an epigraph remembers the memory of the restoration of the chapel and the remaking of the floor. The existing framework of S. Antonio in 1685 was replaced by the one of the Madonna. A beautiful statue of St. Anthony on the left of the altar. The church was renovated in 1904.
Patron Saint: Sant’Antonio | June 13
On the feast day, in the evening, there is the traditional procession by sea and then on the beach of Marina del Cantone, with the local band. The Eucharistic celebration follows.
At the end of the liturgical celebrations the people gather for a festival on the beach, with seafood specialties and music.
The traditional gozzi (the typical boat of Sorrento Coast) competition, held in the afternoon of the same day, has been expanded in recent years with the competition of pedalo and canoe.
