Handmade jewels in Massa Lubrense
The handmade jewels represent the excellence of the craftsmanship of Massa Lubrense and surroundings, capturing the beauty and uniqueness of each piece. They are not only accessories, but real treasures that tell stories and emotions!
We had the pleasure of interviewing Roberta Gargiulo, the founder of Sirene Jewels, a talented jewelry design that creates unique and unrepeatable pieces.
How did the idea of making handmade jewels come about ?
For 25 years I have worked in the creation of jewelry for jewelry and fashion jewelry companies, accumulating extensive experience in the sector. This allowed me to finally realize my dream. So after several years, I was able to start my own business, dedicating myself to the search for materials and sources of inspiration. Among other things, my experience has allowed me to establish numerous contacts with suppliers, facilitating the production of my jewelry.
In addition, I became professor of jewelry design at the goldsmith center Il Tarì, where I worked for years. This experience has further enriched my professional background.
What does the name Sirene Jewels refer to?
I chose this name for my brand because it is linked to our Neapolitan territory. I am being originally from Massa Lubrense, where the myth of mermaids is renowned and known by all. This myth tells how the sirens, with their bewitching songs, had enchanted Ulysses in the waters of the island of Li Galli. It is a story to which I feel particularly attached, since the figure of the mermaid has always fascinated me: half woman and half fish, it represents a unique hybrid and an idea of freedom. So the sirens perfectly reflect my approach to jewelry making. The mermaid tail has become the icon present in every piece of my jewelry, an identifying symbol of my brand. This symbol, made of 925 silver, denotes even more importance and uniqueness to the brand.
How are your jewels related to the territory of Massa Lubrense and the one of Campania?
The jewels I make already represent the Neapolitan territory. It is evident the reference to our territory in the various colors, inspired by our landscape of Campania. The theme of the sea is a dominant element in my creations, with colors that recall the crystal clear waters of Massa Lubrense and the particular green of the surrounding mountains and highlands, as well as the infinite shades that give us the sunsets over the sea. Mediterranean culture offers many creative ideas. Although I focus mainly on the theme of the hybrid represented by mermaids, I have also created jewelry inspired by Turkish and Moroccan traditions. Also the colors and materials that I use, such as malt, ceramics and corals, always refer to the territory of Campania, giving my creations a deep bond with our territory.
What materials do you prefer to use in your creations and why?
The choice of materials varies according to the type and model of jewelry I want to make.
I don’t limit myself to just one material: going back to the concept of hybrid, I also choose different metals whenever possible to obtain an impeccable yield in the final jewel. I have a wide choice of models made with hypoallergenic materials. I mainly use silver to keep production costs low compared to gold. But I also use metals like steel and brass in other jewelry to embed stones in some jewelry.
As for the materials, I don’t limit myself in the choice. If I see that it’s feasible and interesting to combine, I do. I have a wide range of options: coral, pearls, turquoise paste, amethyst, jade, mother of pearl and even ceramics. For example, I created a whole set inspired by the sea using jade in the colors of the lagoon, inspired by the beaches of Massa Lubrense where the water varies between a green and a blue very beautiful.
Do you also make personalized jewelry?
Yes, I make also custom jewelry. Sometimes I am asked a particular color that matches a dress for a special event. Another customization option is to incorporate letters into the jewelry, making each piece unique with its own initial.
