FAI Summer Nights in Massa Lubrense
Stories of heroes and mythological deities will be the backdrop for astronomical observations at “FAI Summer Nights” in the Baia di Ieranto and Punta Campanella, in Massa Lubrense.
From June to September 2024, the “FAI Summer Nights” returns with over 300 events in 30 FAI sites across Italy. As part of these events, stories of heroes and mythological deities will be the backdrop for astronomical observations in the stunning Baia di Ieranto and Punta Campanella in Massa Lubrense.
These summer evenings are designed to offer a truly unique visitor experience. Visitors can extend their visits until sunset and enjoy the special atmosphere of the long summer evenings at FAI sites through a rich program of events and initiatives. Among these activities there are: picnics on the lawn at sunset, aperitifs under the shade of centuries-old trees, concerts and performances under the stars, brief astronomy lessons, local summer traditions, cultural meetings at dusk, and guided trekking and walks that uncover hidden corners and natural beauty surrounding the Italian Environmental Fund sites.
“FAI Summer Nights” in Massa Lubrense: When and How the Events Take Place
In Massa Lubrense, the “Sere FAI d’Estate” events are called “Mitiche Stelle” and they will take place on the following dates: July 12, 27, and 28; August 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 30, and 31, 2024.
The event includes a short walk at sunset, leading participants to one of the most scenic viewpoints on the Punta Campanella promontory, from where you can admire the Gulf of Naples and Salerno, Capri, and the Baia di Ieranto. Upon arrival, guests will wait for nightfall and the appearance of the starry sky for a guided astronomical observation with astronomer Piter Cardone. This will be followed by an engaging and informative lecture that offers not only a look into the principles of astronomy but also insight into the myths linked to the constellations and the passion that Emperor Tiberius had for observing the celestial sphere from his retreat at Villa Jovis on the island of Capri.
The guided observation will reveal the constellations visible during the season. For example the Summer Triangle (featuring Cygnus, Lyra, and Aquila), Cassiopeia, Perseus, Cepheus, Andromeda and Pegasus. The event will conclude with a look at the Milky Way and an exploration of the issue of light pollution.
